KUALA LUMPUR, 17 JUNE 2021: Period stigmas have long hindered young girls to pursue their dreams. But not anymore. Kotex launches the Kotex #SheCan Project to empower young girls in Malaysia to manage their periods with dignity. The project aims to help educate 100,000 high school girls in 100 schools about the importance of menstrual hygiene, mental health and body positivity, all in a bid to help fight period stereotypes within the society.

Leveraging gamification as a way to engage today’s digital-first generation of girls and to have as many of them as possible to safely participate in all activities in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the programme is built on a microsite. It includes a series of games that educates girls about topics such as period hygiene, mental health and body positivity. From the programme, which is recognised by the Ministry of Education, a total of RM100,000, will be donated to the top 10 participating schools.

Known as the Kotex #SheCan Fund, the money will go to supporting these schools in building better learning facilities such as e-learning equipment, to provide a higher quality learning environment for the girls. Additionally, high school girls from the participating schools will also receive free sanitary products to further highlight the importance of period hygiene.

Radhika Agarwal, Marketing Manager for Kimberly-Clark Malaysia says,

“For far too long, girls have had their aspirations and goals hindered because of their periods. As a brand that champion’s women’s progress, it is our priority to help put an end to this stigma. Building on the success of the Kotex Hygiene Talks in 2020 and the theme of this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day, we want to help break the silence and stigma around menstruation. More importantly, we want to support today’s high school girls on their journey to become tomorrow’s generation of confident women,”

With influencers and social media personalities resonating strongly with the current generation, Kotex has also collaborated with influencers Cupcake Aisyah (@cupcake_aisyah on Instagram) and Kashika Selvam (@kashikaselvam on Instagram) to share their period experiences within different levels of the game itself. Level two, themed Trust Yourself, Love Yourself, will be helmed by Cupcake Aisyah, where she will be sharing her experiences growing up as a teen as well as her journey to self-discovery and acceptance. Meanwhile, Kashika Selvem takes over level three of the game to highlight the importance of body positivity and accepting girls of all shapes and sizes.

Through the collaboration with these influencers, Kotex aims to break the stigma about periods and educate young girls on the importance of talking about these issues openly.

“The Kotex #SheCan Project educates teenage girls on how to deal with puberty effectively. The gamification elements also work very well to help students boost their self-confidence and to learn to accept themselves for who they are, without drawing comparisons from unrealistic beauty standards. Kudos to Kotex for successfully organising this much-needed platform for our girls,” said Norizaitul Akmal, a teacher from SMK (P) Kapar.

“The programme has made a massive impact in my life. As a teenager, I was exposed to the toxic standards of beauty and struggled to deal and accept the changes in my body, due to puberty. I am incredibly grateful to Cupcake Aisyah and Kashika for telling their stories and allowing me to change my interpretation of beauty and  feel comfortable in my own skin. I now believe I can be confident to seize the day and pursue my dreams,” said Asshuriatul Huda, a student form SMK (P) Kapar.

To join the fun on breaking period stigmas and championing girls’ progress to be incredible #SheCan Women, simply head to www.kotexshecanproject.com and participate in all three game levels, winning your high school a share of the RM100,000 Kotex #SheCanFund.
