Eighth installment breaks away from regular festival programming to introduce entirely new vertical featuring sustainability champions
Southeast Asia’s first and only festival of ideas, The Cooler Lumpur Festival, returns with its eighth edition – The Cooler Lumpur Festival presents GroundUP this November.
The Cooler Lumpur Festival is a KL-centric multidisciplinary festival that adopts specific themes each year with the aim to expand the city’s cultural horizons, build stronger communities and cultivate the creativity and imagination of its residents. It is the only platform which brings together creative thinkers, doers and innovators from all across the globe to create new connections, to share and spread new ideas and to serve as a catalyst to our cultural conversation.
2020 has been a year of change in every way imaginable. Businesses, individuals, families and governments across the world have been forced to adapt, rethink, renew, and regroup, quite literally from the ground up. The Covid19 pandemic brought to light the vulnerabilities in all societies. Two of the big items were poverty and humankind’s basic necessities – leading everyone to rethink sustainable living.
Over the past seven years, The Cooler Lumpur Festival has championed questions of sustainability including food security, urban farming and sustainable living. This year, we break away from our regular festival programming to introduce an entirely new vertical – GroundUP – that will feature the thinkers, doers and leaders in the sustainability sphere. Over the past few years, many of them have been working at the fringes. It is time our sustainability champs take centrestage. They might just help us save ourselves and our planet.
Details of the festival are as follows:
Day/Date: Tuesday, 3rd November to Sunday, 8th November 2020
Time: 10am onwards
Venue: Publika, Solaris Dutamas
People of all ages from all walks of life are invited to participate in a series of activities at the festival which include:
1. THE BELLY GOOD FOOD MARKET
Day/Dates: Friday to Sunday, 6 – 8 November 2020
Venue: The Gallery @ Publika
The Belly Good Food Market will be making its triumphant third return at this year’s The Cooler Lumpur Festival. As the pioneering artisanal food creators market of its kind, the Belly Good Food Market features a market highlighting local foodpreneurs creating new ideas in food using local artisanal products. Not your typical pop-up market where you buy cakes and crepes – expect to taste and learn groundbreaking ideas in food products, sustainable packaging, sourcing ingredients, building a good food network and food entrepreneurship – all in the name of better living.
With food as our national obsession and eating a favourite pastime, we have since bore witness to a passionate few who have taken this oral fixation of ours soaring to new culinary heights. From stylish sambals to chic chocolates, Malaysians have proven just how fresh, hip and creative they can be with regards to artisanal food. Over the years, the festival has welcomed the likes of forward-thinking and experimental food artisans including spice maestros Athene Spices, cheese artisans Milky Whey Cheese and ice cream ala supper club style connoisseurs Pun’s Ice Cream. This year’s installment will also introduce mini events including:
- Eat GroundUP – A mini forum area for talks and sharing sessions by participating foodpreneurs
- Kidpreneurs Bazaar – Come and lend support to the new age young entrepreneurs
- Pre-loved Maternity Booth – Embrace a circular economy of tenderly loved pieces – from one mother to another
2. BIKIN FOR CHARITY
Day/Dates: Friday to Sunday, 6 – 8 November 2020
Venue: The Square @ Publika
What better way to learn new carpentry skills and be part of a social contribution than at the second edition of Bikin for Charity in partnership with wood-making workshop Ignition Lab. As a gotong-royong project, the general public can come together to build furniture using pre-cut furniture pieces that will be donated towards communities in need such as underprivileged schools, orphanages and refugee centres.
In 2019, Ignition Lab and Me.reka collaborated to build furniture from used wooden pallets that were custom made for partner orphanages in the Klang Valley. Shalom Education Centre and Dignity for Children benefited from 30 chairs and 30 desks, and six shoe racks and five bookshelves that were built on the festival grounds. Other than the general public furniture building, there will also be specially curated sessions for autistic kids and senior citizens taking place throughout the weekend.
3. BAWATANA SPROUT
Day/Date: Saturday, 7 November 2020
Curated by up-and-coming brand accelerator Bawatana, the festival will play host to its inaugural Bawatana Sprout which is an intensive one-day startup accelerator programme specially focused on branding and marketing. The programme will be led by an exciting stable of entrepreneurs and creative industry gurus across various subject areas within the branding and marketing sphere including brand DNA, valuation and public relations to name a few. It will be a paid registration-only event limited to 20 startups.
