KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 11, 2020 – Should your periods get in the way of your ambitions? More than 100 years ago, women working as war-time nurses stitched together hygiene pads that were made from Kimberly-Clark’s cellucotton bandages so they could stay on the front lines during their period. Born from the need to progress even amidst adversity, Kotex has continued to champion women’s progress for 100 years. Today, Kotex commemorates 100 years of progress with the first ever ‘She Can Awards’ – a way of honouring and celebrating Malaysian women and their progress.
The Kotex She Can Awards aims to celebrate the progress of 100 Malaysian achievers with a one-of-a-kind recognition and commemoration. The awards honor these women for being at the forefront of their industries as they paved the way for women’s progress in Malaysia. Recognising these women as local heroes, Kotex will award them with a She Can Award and commemorate these 100 Malaysian women by immortalizing them in the form of art and storytelling in an upcoming digital series by the brand, titled She Universe featuring the 100 superheroes. A collective series to showcase the achievements and keep their stories alive, She Universe will feature a collection of the 100 women as illustrated female superheroes accompanied with their individual success stories.
Kotex has identified a diverse range of women achievers from varying fields including academia, entertainment, sports, science and technology and more. These women have broken the mould and normalised what was once seen as unreachable – from athlete Annie Choong, the first Malaysian Olympian in 1956, to Patricia Yapp, the first woman in the world to become a qualified fighter pilot in 2017. These are 100 Malaysian superwomen with 100 magnificent stories to tell, all compiled in She Universe, Kotex’s first ever collection of Malaysian female superheroes.
